Distinguished guests, Parents, Teachers and students,
Good evening!
Today we gather here celebrating the graduation of the class of 2018 and the outstanding results they obtained. After 3 years of hard work, you have won the favor of the most prestigious universities in the world with excellent academic performance and competitive overall qualities. Today, on behalf of all staff and students of HSANNU, I would like to say congratulations to all the graduating students as well as all parents, thanks for your trust and support for our program. Also I would like to give my best regards to all teaching staff in the IB center, thank you for your perseverance in teaching.
At this moment, we, people from different geographical regions in the world and of distinctive cultural backgrounds gather together to celebrate this great moment; In the near future, all students sitting here will go to different countries, start a new journey of pursuing knowledge and experiencing exotic culture. This can be seen as a typical miniature ‘globalization’.
The term ‘globalization’ was created in 1930s,and Now, 80 years later, this process has pervaded every aspect of our lives from daily commodities and electronic products to culture and entertainment, from the diverse international education resources to the various concepts such as ‘global village’ ,‘website’ and ‘international perspective ’ in our minds. We take the convenience brought by globalization for granted and get used to allowing our minds to be impacted by it.
Geography is a foundation course for globalization. My major in university was geography and I used to be a geography teacher. The Chinese words for geography‘地理’appeared for the first time in one of the classical works I- Ching ( the book of changes), which says:By astronomical observation and geographical survey people know the mystery/rules of the world. Geography was once considered the mother of all sciences. The focus of ancient geologists was to explore how to measure the shape or size of Earth or how to describe the known regions or countries. Alexander von Humboldt, German naturalist and explorer, was a major figure in founding the modern geography. He advocated long-term systematic geographical measurements and travelled extensively in West Europe, North Asia and Latin America. The surveying of South America alone took him five years, and finally upon these arduous travelling he published a 30-volume set of book named Personal Narrative of Travels to the Equinoctial Regions of the New continent, During the Year 1799-1804. Not only did he pioneer in defining isotherm, isobar and drawing the map of isotherms, he also led the research on relationships between biome and Earth’s climate.
At that time, geologists were working on the collection of geographical knowledge on a world scale and the completing of a world map. These maps guided the most brave sailors and interest-seeking capitalists to their destinations and branded the patterns of globalization in people’s mind.
Timothy Brook, a history professor in Oxford, wrote in his works: the history of anywhere links us to everywhere, and finally connects us to the history of the world, and any part of the history-any massacre and achievement-is part of our shared heritage. In the era of globalization, no man is an island, entire of itself. Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. Not only should we happily enjoy such abundant material and spiritual resources brought by globalization, but we should also have sufficient understanding about various subjects and phenomenon around us so that we can live up to this fast changing era.
The construction of the Belt and the Road requires a global perspective to expand opportunities in developing the old Asia, Africa and Europe continent. The seeking of cross-region cooperation, between China and East Europe, China and Africa, China and EU, must be built on the understanding of regional differences and the allowing for disagreements. A community of shared future is not only a community of shared development but also a community of common survival. In the age of globalization, a maintainable long-term development rests on the basic understanding of mutually beneficial cooperation and agreement on a harmonious coexistence. You, who are going to perform in the center of the world stage, will be a generation essential for enhancing our overall strength.
IB educates you to be a knowledgeable, reflective, empathetic ‘full man’. HSANNU’s spirit of ‘leading the ethos, being inclusive and equitable’will always encourage you to stick to your dream and pursue excellence.
Now you are going to leave school and enter the society, I would like to remind you of HSANNU’s motto: aim high, and seek deep learning. On your future journey of learning, please be practical and creative; have our country in mind and the entire world in view.
Soon you are leaving China and walk into the world, please remember President Xi’s words: love your country, have a dream, seek the truth, and try hard. On your future journey of proving yourself, please reward our country, respect the truth, and practice your knowledge.
Again, congratulations! All graduating students! Let us share your happiness! Thank you!
